Within two years, companies and organizations operating in any of the EU's member states are required to comply with the EU's new data protection regulation. On August 21, an international and interdisciplinary summer research school starts at Karlstad University with a focus on how the new regulation, and for example Big data, cloud services and autonomous systems affect the management and protection of personal data.

During one week, more than 80 researchers and research students from all over the world visit Karlstad University to participate in the IFIP Summer School on Privacy and Identity Management.

- Privacy by Design and Default is part of the new regulation which we will focus on the most during the week, says Simone Fischer Hübner, professor of computer science and head of the summer research school.

Record high participation
The summer research school links research students with international researchers. It is the eleventh time in 23 years that the IFIP Summer School has been organized and with a record high participation.

- This is the third time the summer research school has been organized at Karlstad University and it is a fantastic opportunity for us, says Lothar Fritsch, docent in computer science at Karlstad University and locally responsible for the summer research school. This means that top researchers in our research area come here. We get the opportunity to show off our environment and our research, and our researchers get the opportunity to listen to and meet exciting researchers.

Internationally known lecturers
Every day during the week, workshops, doctoral presentations and lectures are arranged with internationally known profiles in Privacy and Identity Management.

One of the lecturers is Amelia Andersdotter, expert on the information society, intellectual property law and IT policy, representative in the European Parliament between 2011-2014 and initiator of dataskydd.net.
