MACHINE LEARNING - FROM THEORY TO APPLICATION

Guest lecture with Erik Hallin, Lead Data Scientist at Uddeholm AB

The implementation of facial and speech recognition, cancer detection algorithms, self-driving cars and many other technological innovations have caused artificial intelligence to become one of the most hyped topics of today. It is now ingrained in our society, whether we surf the internet or walk through a passport control. Yet, artificial intelligence remains something obscure and somewhat of a black-box to many. In the talk, we will unveil the mystery of artificial intelligence by looking at one of its core components: machine learning.

Machine learning is the concept of building models through algorithms that learn from data without explicit instructions. We will discuss the logic behind some of these foundational algorithms, as well as display how an organization like Uddeholm is able to implement machine learning models. Our discussion will also address the practical obstacles one must overcome to leverage the power of machine learning in order to gain previously unknown insights and predict future events.
